The MedSTAR Fly-Along Program is
designed to allow Health Professionals or related Emergency Services
Personnel, who meet our specific requirements, to accompany the
MedSTAR Team on flights. The program benefits both the
observer and the medical crew when knowledge and expertise are
shared during the observer experience.
The observer will better understand
and appreciate the range of responsibility in pre-flight
preparation, pre-flight assessment/preparation and
intervention, in-flight limitations and environment, and
aircraft operational procedures.
1. Statement of Policy
To provide an educational opportunity for
personnel to participate in patient care
transports.
2. Qualifications
A.
Pennsylvania certified paramedic with medical command
status.
B.
Pennsylvania certified emergency medical technician.
C.
Practicing Registered Nurse.
D.
Communications specialists.
E.
Physically fit, without restrictions; i.e. motion sickness, lifting
restrictions, etc.
F.
Maximum body weight of 200 pounds.
3. Dress
Code
A.
Boots
B.
Regular work uniform; i.e. jumpsuit, EMS pants and shirt,
etc.
C.
Appropriate weather protection; i.e. turtleneck, long underwear,
heavy socks, gloves. 100% cotton garments are
suggested.
4.
Schedule
A.
Months of March, April, May, September, October, and
November.
B. Six
hour shifts (9am-3pm and 3pm-9pm). Individual may fly once
during the spring and once during the fall. May reschedule if
there is inclement weather and the aircraft is unable to
fly.
C.

5.
Requirements
A.
Appropriate safety briefing prior to flight, which will be provided
on the day of the fly along.
6. Continuing
Education
A.
Completion of the "Fly Along Orientation Program" will provide 6.5
hours to paramedics and PHRN's only and 4.0 hours for
EMT's. Please complete a continuing education
card.
